Learn Life-Saving Skills from the Experts
The Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI), University of Benin, successfully conducted a Nursing Simulation Training on 19 August 2026 at the CERHI Simulation Laboratory, Benin City.
The training, themed “Learn Life-Saving Skills from the Experts,” focused on two essential areas of maternal and newborn healthcare: Normal Delivery of a Baby and newborn resuscitation.
The practical, simulation-based programme strengthened participants’ clinical competence, confidence, teamwork, communication, decision-making, and emergency preparedness. Participants received expert demonstrations and hands-on training using simulation models and equipment in a safe and controlled learning environment.
Developing Practical Maternal and Newborn Care Skills
During the normal delivery session, participants practiced essential skills related to preparing the delivery environment, infection prevention and control, supporting mothers during labour and delivery, conducting safe delivery procedures, and providing immediate newborn care.
The newborn resuscitation session introduced participants to the principles of rapid newborn assessment, airway support, recognition of breathing difficulties, assisted ventilation, continuous reassessment, and coordinated emergency response.
Realistic clinical scenarios and team-based exercises enabled participants to practice responding to time-sensitive maternal and newborn situations while receiving guidance and constructive feedback from experienced facilitators.
Strengthening Healthcare Capacity Through Simulation
The training demonstrates the value of simulation-based healthcare education in preparing healthcare professionals to respond effectively to real-life clinical situations. It provided participants with an opportunity to practice procedures repeatedly, learn from mistakes, and build confidence without placing patients at risk.
The programme forms part of CERHI’s commitment to innovative healthcare education, reproductive health training, and capacity development. Through practical and competency-based learning, CERHI continues to support the development of skilled healthcare professionals capable of contributing to improved maternal and newborn health outcomes in Nigeria.
